TAYLOR, C. RICHARD, KNUT SCHMIDT-NIELSEN, AND JACOB L. RAAB, Scaling of energetic cost of running to body size in mammals. Am. J. Physiol. 219(4) : 1104-l 107. 1970.-The purpose of this study was to see if a convenient relationship could be found between the energetic cost of running and the body weight of mammals. We found that steady-state oxygen consumption of seven groups of mammals (21 g-18 kg) increased almost linearly with running speed. Oxygen consumption (M, ml 02 g-l hr-l) relative to running velocity (V, km hr-l) could be expressed by linear equations:

Scaling of muscle fibres and locomotion.
To reconcile the scaling of the mechanics and energetics of locomotion to recent data on the scaling of the mechanics of muscle fibres, I have extended the theory of Taylor and colleagues that the energetic cost of locomotion is determined by the cost of generating force by the fibres. By assuming (1) that the cost of generating force in a fibre is proportional to V(max) (maximum velocity of sh...
متن کاملThe energetic cost of limbless locomotion.
The net energetic cost of terrestrial locomotion by the snake Coluber constrictor, moving by lateral undulation, is equivalent to the net energetic cost of running by limbed animals (arthropods, lizards, birds, and mammals) of similar size. In contrast to lateral undulation and limbed locomotion, concertina locomotion by Coluber is more energetically expensive. The findings do not support the w...
متن کاملThe evolution of cost ef®cient swimming in marine mammals: limits to energetic optimization
Mammals re-entered the oceans less than 60 million years ago. The transition from a terrestrial to an aquatic lifestyle required extreme morphological and behavioural modi¢cations concomitant with fundamentally di¡erent locomotor mechanisms for moving on land and through water. Energetic transport costs typically re£ect such di¡erent locomotor modes, but can not be discerned from the fossil rec...
متن کاملShaking a leg and hot to trot: the effects of body size and temperature on running speed in ants
1. Data were compiled from the literature and our own studies on 24 ant species to characterise the effects of body size and temperature on forager running speed. 2. Running speed increases with temperature in a manner consistent with the effects of temperature on metabolic rate and the kinetic properties of muscles. 3. The exponent of the body mass-running speed allometry ranged from 0.14 to 0...
متن کاملThe energy cost of voluntary running in the weasel Mustela nivalis.
The small size and elongate shape of weasels (Mustela nivalis) probably evolved to facilitate movement within the burrow systems of prey species, but result in high energy costs of thermoregulation. In this study we measured metabolic rates of weasels during voluntary locomotion to determine whether energy costs of transport are also high in these unusually shaped mammals. In addition, we measu...
